Dog-friendly things to do near Lady Bird Lake
The best dog days are the ones you don’t have to plan
You picked Lady Bird Lake for a reason, and so did every dog owner in Austin. Here is where locals take their pups, all within a short drive or walk of our homes.
Ann and Roy Butler Hike-and-Bike Trail. The 10-mile paved loop circles Lady Bird Lake with skyline views the whole way. Leashed dogs are welcome along the entire trail, and it connects directly to most of the spots below. Weekday mornings are the calmest.
Red Bud Isle. A 13-acre off-leash island on the lake, reached by a small bridge just below Tom Miller Dam. Dogs roam, swim, and make friends in a quiet, tree-shaded setting. Address: 3401 Redbud Trail. It fills up on weekends, so go early.
Auditorium Shores off-leash area. A 4.5-acre leash-free zone right on the banks of the lake at 900 W Riverside Drive, with wide-open grass and downtown views. Public restrooms and picnic tables make it an easy stop mid-walk.
Zilker Park. The off-leash area sits on the north side of Barton Springs Road, with hundreds of acres of lawn for fetch and frisbee. The south side is leash-only, so watch the signs.
Barkin’ Springs. The unofficial dog beach just downstream of Barton Springs Pool, where pups splash in the cold spring-fed creek for free. Note that Barton Springs Pool itself does not allow dogs, so this is the spot for a cool-off on a hot day.
Yard Bar. Austin’s original off-leash dog park and bar, with a full menu for you and 20,000 square feet of run-around space for them.
Coffee and patios. Mozart’s Coffee Roasters has a big shaded lakeside patio, and dog-friendly patios are the norm across town. Your dog is welcome almost everywhere the food is served outdoors.
Safety notes for Austin summers
- Check the algae. Blue-green algae can spike in Lady Bird Lake in warm, stagnant months. Check the City of Austin monitoring page before letting your dog swim, and use Barkin’ Springs or Red Bud Isle’s calmer water when levels are a concern.
- Watch the pavement. Texas sidewalks get hot enough to burn paws. Walk early or after sunset in summer.
- Bring water. Most parks have fountains, but carry your own for the trail.
- Know the leash law. Dogs must be leashed everywhere except the marked off-leash areas.

- Pack the basics from home: bowls, bed, a favorite toy, and enough food for the trip.
- Bring a crate if your dog uses one, so they have a familiar spot while you are out.
- Save a local vet and 24-hour animal hospital in your phone before you arrive.
- Give your dog a long walk on arrival day. A tired dog settles into a new place faster.
- Keep waste bags on you. Austin parks stay clean because everyone pitches in.
